Boss Ladies | Jenna Kutcher
When Kat and I chatted recently about some new series for the Refined Woman this year, I realized that one thing we have more than anything else in our lives are some powerful women. Women who are going after their dreams, launching businesses, and looking good while doing it. Women who are real and beautiful and funny and smart. Women we learn from just by watching them do their own thing. We definitely wouldn't be where we are today without the support of these women who are going after this with us and cheering us on behind the scenes.
This series is to celebrate them. To just get to show them off to you. I think that it's true that who you surround yourself with is a great reflection of what you can do.I am so thrilled to start off our Boss Ladies series with the multi-talented Jenna Kutcher!
Jenna has been an integral part of our relaunch - she's done art for our logo and for Kat's Sexless in the City Column as well as for our Beauty is... events. She's a photographer, artist, and most of all a real Boss Lady.
How did you get started doing what you do?
Fate? Destiny? God's plan? Hard work? A little dumb luck? I was stuck working in a corporate job, climbing a corporate ladder that I didn't want to climb while planning my wedding. I bought a camera on Craigslist by chance and photographed by brother-in-laws wedding in Jamaica. The rest is sort of history mixed with hustle, but either way, I was hooked and knew I wanted to make something for myself. Since then I have shot almost 100 weddings, spoken at workshops all over the country, launched a watercolor print shop, led entrepreneurs to running a profitable business through my online marketing course, and contributed to some of the top blogs in the world!
The dumbest thing I ever did when I was starting out was
Believe that I would work less. They say a true entrepreneur would rather work 80 hours for themselves than 40 for someone else and holy cow, that is so entirely true.
If I was an emoji I would be
The girl in the pink shirt with her hand up to the side. Because I totally talk with my hands and I schedule a lot of mentoring calls while walking my dogs, so I am generally walking up and down our street talking with my hands.
My last meal on earth would be
Macaroni and cheese shapes, no doubt.
I can’t stand when other people
Judge others situations, decisions, or choices. A little less judgement, a little more kindness. Amy Poehler was right on with her quote, "Good for them, not for me." I truly believe we are all just doing the very best we can do.
Are you more like your mom or dad?
Mom, for sure, but I like to think I'm a little of both. My mom is like Mother Teresa, my dad is a little rebellious. I think I am a mix but I'm told I'm the spitting image of my mother.
Growing up I really wanted to be
A plastic surgeon. No lie, I signed up as pre-med for college.
My biggest guilty pleasure is
Macaroni and Cheese and taking naps. Both happen far too frequently.
One thing people don’t know about me
I was a springboard diver all through college! I took my gymnastics childhood and had a pretty solid college career as a diver! I even still hold some school records!
Most likely to
Trip and fall. I am a pro at tucking and rolling, let's just say my clumsiness is something I am well aware of.
My spirit animal is
Beyonce.
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee, coffee, in large quantities.
Top of my bucket list is to
Help others either prayerfully, financially, or through missions.
Night owl or early bird?
Early bird! I wake up at 6:55 every single day, even though I am my own boss.
The item of clothing that makes me feel like a boss is
Yoga pants! What better reminder that I don't work for anyone but myself (and who doesn't like working in comfort?)
XO,
Jenna
