$7/Day to a 6-Figure Book Deal: Part II
LISTEN NOW: ITUNES // SPOTIFY // STITCHER
Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for producing this podcast!!
Last week, I shared on the podcast how I made $7/day after college living out of a van working for a non-profit. Then I found my way to photography and ultimately built a 6-figure photography business. But as you know, that’s only part of my career journey. Along the way, I also started The Refined Woman and created this podcast, The Refined Collective.
The last thing the world needs is another fashion blog…
When I was deep into my photography career, I felt this God nudge to start something for women.
The blog featured women all over the US who were photographers trying to find the balance between fashionable and functionable.
I invited my friend Emily Scott to be a co-founder and we jumped in without a plan.
The biggest business mistakes I’ve made
We didn’t have a bank account for TRW (granted, we weren’t making any money for about 7 years).
We didn’t establish roles, responsibilities, or expectations.
We had no clear vision or mission statement.
Bottom line: we treated it like a hobby, so it became an expensive and draining hobby.
The Pivot
I was getting bored of outfit posts, so I started sharing written blog posts about my life… my love life, my anxiety, my eating disorder.
Emily left The Refined Woman to pursue other aspirations.
The $20k Jenna Kutcher Mastermind helped me realize I could invest in myself and gave me valuable feedback on my vision.
I launched my first course, this very podcast, and began to focus more on sharing my own personal story with my audience.
Next week, I’ll finish the story with how I landed a 6-figure book deal with one of the top publishers in the world. If you want to hear that episode now…go to Patreon.com/therefinedcollective and you can listen to it now (ad-free) and have access to a ton of other Patreon exclusive content.

Did you know that companies can claim their beef is grass-fed as long as the cow was fed grass at some point in its life? Oftentimes the cows will be finished on grain but are still marketed as grass fed. Paleovalley is clear about their process and their ingredients. Their beef sticks come from small, American-owned farms that practice rotational grazing. And their cows are always fed and finished with grass. Go to www.paleovalley.com and use code KAT15 for 15% off your first purchase.
