Ask Kat: Tithing During Deconstruction? Faith Compatibility in Dating + More

LISTEN NOW: ITUNES // SPOTIFY // STITCHER

Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for producing this podcast!!

Welcome back to the Ask Kat series! It’s basically like my Mentor Monday IG story series (which you can keep up with here), but this is the first time where you get to send in an audio file of your questions and I answer them live on air! If you want to submit your question for the next Ask Kat episode, go to speakpipe.com/trc.

Sydney: How do you handle criticism from friends and family who don’t agree with your deconstruction?

  • My family doesn’t comment on my faith. To be honest, I was the one who judged myself the most for my deconstruction.

  • You can’t control what a person does or doesn’t think of you. This is a hard truth.

  • Also, we judge in others what we judge in ourselves.

Anna: When should I bring up conversations about faith compatibility in a relationship context?

  • Can you let go of your attachment to being with someone who is at the exact same spot as you in your faith journey?

  • Faith is important–but underneath that, are they open + curious and committed to their growth?

  • When I focus on being playful with a guy, the serious conversations come up naturally.

  • Release the pressure–who and what we love comes up naturally over time. Intimacy can’t be rushed..

Hannah: What advice would you give someone looking to start a photography business right now?

  • Advice:

    • Treat it like it’s a thing before it’s a thing.

    • What’s your ‘why’? Watch this Ted Talk.

    • Invest in coaching. (I offer coaching here if you’re interested)

    • Connect with other entrepreneurs.

    • Don’t chase social media success.

    • Popular doesn’t pay the bills.

  • Starting the business:

    • Create your ideal client avatar.

    • Recreate shoots and practice!

Mallorie: How do I navigate when God has put something on my heart when my community may not agree? Specifically when it comes to dating a new Christian.

  • There might be an invitation for you in this to let go of the need to garner the approval of others..

  • “Follow the ways of Jesus and burst through the mold of what everyone else is expecting you to be and do.”

Heather: What are your thoughts on tithing? Where do you tithe? Do you just give to the church?

  • What if we talked about embracing a lifestyle of generosity?

  • Generous people change the world?

  • How are you taking care of the people in your world?

  • I currently do not currently go to church or give money to church. I am currently supporting Compassion International, Equal Justice Initiative, Goldenwood NYC, and I support a missionary couple overseas.

If your partner walked into your life today, would you be ready? A few years ago, my friend Stephanie May Wilson created a quiz to help navigate this. It’s called Are You Ready To Meet Your Person? Download it for free at StephanieMayWilson.com/kat.
