To the woman who never stops dreaming and striving to be a better version of herself, but who is full of amazing grace too. You make me want to dream bigger and this blog would not be what it is without you.
You are the peanut butter to my jelly, and I’m so glad you were born. You make my world a better place by being in it.
You are beautiful and cherished.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAT!
Oh hey friends! Happy Thursday!
What are you going to make happen today ladies?
Do you ever wake and up and feel like it’s going to be a productive day, like you’re going to freakin’ rock it? That’s how my day is going to go! I’m going to own it.
Does anyone else ever just want to crawl back in bed and sleep until noon when they finish their daily to-do list? Ya…me too. But we get to choose movement, and we get to choose chipping away at our to-do’s because life happens in the movement.
Dreams happen with the continual, consistent, commitment to show up to our days. Ideas, tasks, to-dos, visions, dreams, you name it are all fantasies until we fight for them to become reality.
Today I’m fighting for my dreams to be realities. I’m stepping into today ready to own it. Also I’m stepping into today with my favorite JCrew Cobalt trousers (umm…they’re glorified sweatpants…and I’m in love #iwokeupthisway). Who is with me?
Tell me about your day, tell me what you’re going to chase and make happen. I’m proud and honored to run this race + journey with you!

Kat is the one who is always pushing us forward. Without her, The Refined Woman just wouldn’t be around at all much less be where it is today. We have had an amazing year starting this journey on The Refined Woman. She is always moving forward, thinking bigger, and challenging me to BE more. I love her for that, and I think that’s why we are such a good team. I’m dreaming and scheming but Kat is the one who is always taking action. I love seeing how her photography has grown since I’ve known her and this year, I’ve loved seeing her evolve as a stylist as well.
Here are some of my favorite outfits she’s put together for the blog in the past year and just a little bit about what I love about them.
red for fall - I’m crazy about this look because I just would never have paired a red wool pencil skirt with a brown turtleneck but it is just the best combo! I am dying over the tones together with a bit of chunky gold and leopard. Stunning styling.
first date material - This is another color combo I’m crazy about! bright canary yellow plus muted beige is so classy and sophisticated while still being super fun. I mean come on, how is this beautiful friend of mine still single? I don’t get it. AT. ALL.
All I could think after Kat posted this fun mixed textured outfit was GET THEE TO CLUB MONACO. And also, get some hoop earrings! The military coat and patterned pencil are such a cool combo and the hoop earrings, I mean really. Too good. There are so many ways you could take this idea and run with it because a military jacket goes with everything (Kat and I were all about them this year…)
I have always been a fan of a good romper but this post not only solidified my love for their versatility - it also made me go out and get some converse. Paired with the white blazer this outfit just killed me. I love how Kat wears patterns, which is one thing I’m working on for 2014, and I think one great takeaway from this outfit is to pick one pattern and pair it with all white or another color to really make the pattern pop.
It may be because the holidays are over and I’m already in post-Christmas depression, but I’m longing for spring already. Easy tied tops and skirts and color. And as much as dressing for pregnancy is a fun challenge for me, I’m already getting pumped about wearing clothes that don’t have to fit over the belly. I loved this color blocking post so much - and Kat’s combo here is perfect. Again, I’m all about the color. Predictable.
Honorable mentions go to :
country boho - girl knows how to rock those cowboy boots
Cheers to an even better 2014! We love you for following along with us.
Pssst…here’s a secret…I am a bit of a tomboy.
Wearing hats makes me one happy camper, because I can look cute and get away with not having to mess with my hair (which most days I don’t spend more than 5 minutes on).
Club Monaco…you had me at hello.
This blazer has been a wardrobe staple for over a year now, and any excuse I can find I’ll throw it on…even if it’s with a baseball cap!

What Kat wore for the most epic day of our collective lives.
On to more from the Runway! I saw so many incredible gowns that I considered changing my profession to actress just so I could have an excuse to go to a movie premier or, you know, THE OSCARS, so I could wear something this fabulous.
My favorite gowns were Naeem Khan… it was a gorgeous 20s art deco affair. So Gatsby of him.
I die for this one.
Possibly my absolute favorite.
Naeeeeem! You rascal you.
Badgley Mischka also had some stunners that I would be remiss not to mention.
Some of them even us mere mortals could wear even if one was not invited to a red-carpet event.
My personal favorite : I don’t know if it’s one piece or two but I’ll take it either way.
I am dying over all the jewel tones, especially the emerald.
Wait you need to see that one again? I know. Here you go.
What do you think? We would love to hear from you, I’ll be posting all our runway pics on our facebook page and whether you love it, hate it, or predict you’ll see it on the red carpet we’d love to know.
Our last fashion week post is tomorrow, are you sick of it yet? No? Great.
This week in honor of New York Fashion Week Kat + I are excited to share with you the highlights of everything we have been up to, what we are wearing (see also : The Woes of Being a Southern California Girl in A Snowstorm) and what we have been seeing on + off the runway.
We feel so grateful to be here experiencing all of this and so looking forward to sharing our highlights with you.
Really, you get the best of the deal, dear friends, because you get all the fashion minus the freezing winds, snow + slush.
Refined at Fashion Week : Day 1
I swear I looked at the forecast before I packed, but I think there’s only so much one California girl can do to really prepare herself for the reality of a snowstorm.
(You can pin some of my accessories from The Refined Woman on Pinterest!)
Marissa Web's new collection is so wearable! I love the tailored structure to her suits, skirts + coats.
The black + white accessories + inverted french manicure is the perfect compliment.
Some of my favorites from the Marissa Webb presentation:
The Monique Lhuillier runway show knocked my socks off. The way she innovates a gown season after season is such an inspiration to me. Every piece is fitted perfectly to be flattering for a woman’s shape. The texture and detailing was incredible.
Afterwards we made our way backstage + accompanied Krista Soriano as she was able to ask Monique a few words about the collection. See Krista’s piece on Elle.com for more!
